Origins of Nine Star Ki Astrology
Nine Star Ki (pronounced ‘key’ and meaning energy or life-force) is a form of Japanese astrology, which comes from the body of knowledge called the I Ching or Book of Changes. The principles set out here originated approximately 3000 years before the Common Era and were established by Emperor Fu Hsi of China. These original principles of change also underpin Feng Shui, traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture.
What’s in the stars?
Ancient civilisations understood life in terms of two basic forces – yin and yang: feminine, dark and passive energy on the one hand; masculine, light and active energy on the other, interacting to produce all things in nature. They believed that the yang energy of the universe was channelled to earth, and therefore to human beings, via nine stars, hence the title Nine Star Ki. The stars Vega and Polaris are at the outer most reaches of the channel with the seven stars of the Big Dipper (part of the Great Bear or Ursa Major Constellation) between them. Ancient peoples saw the stars as a compass pointing out a different direction at different times and giving the cosmic energy a different quality at those times, affecting our climate and giving rise to the idea of seasons. Ancient peoples also understood that the yin energies emanating from the earth shaped our landscape. It was the interaction between universal energies descending to earth and the energies emanating from the earth, rising towards the heavens that was believed to influence the energetics of the year in which we were born, thus influencing our character.
The rhythms of nature
Also known as 9 House astrology, 9 Star astrology, 9 Star Ki astrology and Feng Shui Astrology, Nine Star Ki is more about the cycles and patterns of nature than the observable positions of the planets and stars.
Nine Star Ki underpins Feng Shui and as such is rooted in the natural environment. Developed at a time when people were in tune with the rhythms of nature, Nine Star Ki is an observation of the interaction between different forces of nature in the environment at different times. Nine distinctive states of energy were observed which occur in a repetitive pattern over time, in cycles of nine years, with smaller cycles of nine months and nine days within this.
The nine year cycle of change observed impacts all life; plant, animal and human. In studying human behaviour and affairs more closely, it is observed that each state influences our perceptions and reactions and therefore how we experience and interact with the world. Each state gives rise to distinct physiological and psychological characteristics, personality traits and potential, hence nine different personality types were observed (and 81 unique combinations which explore our personality and potential.)
Consequently your date of birth predisposes you to certain characteristics, strengths and potential as a child and as an adult. Moreover, where your date of birth sits within the nine year, nine month and nine day cycles influences your stress patterns, your response to change and the way you interact with and relate to others.
Despite our individual upbringings, education and personal decisions, the fundamental patterns of the different personality types are still discernible. Hence Nine Star Ki allows people to better understand themselves and their interactions with others, with the environment and with nature.
